01

Zullen we vanavond samen iets kijken?

Shall we watch something together tonight?

Literal Shall we tonight together something watch?

A natural way to propose a group activity. 'Zullen we...?' (Shall we...?) is the go-to structure for suggesting something to friends.

  • 'Zullen we + infinitive?' forms a group suggestion question
  • The infinitive 'kijken' moves to the end of the clause
02

Ik hou van thrillers, maar jij houdt toch meer van komedies?

I love thrillers, but you prefer comedies, right?

Literal I hold of thrillers, but you hold though more of comedies?

'Ik hou van' and 'jij houdt van' both express liking or loving something. The verb conjugates differently per subject. 'Toch' at the end softly asks for confirmation.

  • 'Ik hou van' = I like/love (informal: the -d is dropped in speech)
  • 'Jij houdt van' = you like/love (second person singular, keeps the -dt)
  • 'Toch' at the end turns a statement into a tag question: 'right?'
03

Laten we die nieuwe serie proberen die iedereen aanbeveelt.

Let's try that new series that everyone is recommending.

Literal Let us that new series try that everyone recommends.

'Laten we...' is the Dutch equivalent of 'let's...' and is ideal for casual suggestions. The infinitive goes to the end of the clause.

  • 'Laten we + infinitive' = Let's + verb
  • 'Die iedereen aanbeveelt' is a relative clause modifying 'serie'
  • 'Aanbevelen' is a separable verb; 'aan' joins the stem at the clause end
04

Dit is veel beter dan de film die we vorige week hebben gezien.

This is much better than the film we watched last week.

Literal This is much better than the film that we last week have seen.

Uses the comparative 'beter dan' (better than). The past tense 'hebben gezien' is the Dutch present perfect, which is the standard way to talk about completed actions in spoken Dutch.

  • 'beter dan' = better than (comparative with 'dan')
  • Present perfect: 'hebben + past participle (gezien)' for completed actions
  • 'vorige week' = last week (literally 'previous week')
05

Kijk dit! Die scène is echt geweldig.

Look at this! That scene is really amazing.

Literal Look this! That scene is truly wonderful.

'Kijk!' is an imperative formed from the verb stem of 'kijken'. 'Echt' intensifies the adjective 'geweldig', making the reaction feel natural and enthusiastic.

  • Imperatives in Dutch use the bare verb stem: 'kijk!' from 'kijken'
  • 'Echt' as an adverb strengthens adjectives: 'really / truly'
  • 'Geweldig' is a very common informal adjective meaning amazing or great
06

Als je wilt, kunnen we daarna nog een aflevering kijken.

If you want, we can watch another episode after that.

Literal If you want, can we after that still one episode watch.

'Als je wilt' introduces a conditional. Notice the verb 'kijken' is pushed to the end of the main clause. 'Nog een' means 'one more' or 'another'.

  • 'Als + subject + verb' = If... (conditional subordinate clause)
  • The main clause after a conditional keeps normal V2 word order
  • 'nog een' = one more / another (adds to what already exists)
07

Wie is jouw favoriete personage in deze serie?

Who is your favorite character in this series?

Literal Who is your favorite character in this series?

A great conversation starter while watching. 'Jouw' is the emphatic form of 'your'. The adjective 'favoriete' takes an -e ending before the noun 'personage'.

  • 'Wie' = who (question word for people)
  • 'jouw' = your (emphatic possessive, stressed form of 'je')
  • Adjective inflection: 'favoriet' → 'favoriete' before a noun
08

Ik vind het einde van elke aflevering altijd zo spannend.

I always find the ending of every episode so exciting.

Literal I find the end of each episode always so exciting.

'Ik vind' expresses a personal opinion or reaction. 'Spannend' is the key adjective for suspenseful or exciting content. 'Altijd' (always) shows a recurring feeling.

  • 'Ik vind + noun + adjective' = I find [something] [adjective]
  • 'altijd' = always (adverb of frequency, placed mid-clause)
  • 'spannend' = exciting/thrilling/suspenseful — common for films and series
09

Wat zullen we de volgende keer kijken?

What shall we watch next time?

Literal What shall we the next time watch?

Combines a question word with the suggestion structure to involve the whole group. 'De volgende keer' means 'next time'. The infinitive 'kijken' goes to the end.

  • 'Wat zullen we...?' = What shall we...? (group planning question)
  • 'de volgende keer' = next time (literally 'the following time')
  • Verb-final order is maintained in the subordinate part of the question
10

Deze regisseur maakt altijd prachtige films.

This director always makes beautiful films.

Literal This director makes always beautiful films.

A simple declarative sentence to share admiration. 'Prachtig' (beautiful/magnificent) becomes 'prachtige' before the plural noun 'films'. 'Deze' is used with plural and de-words.

  • 'deze' = this/these (used with de-words and all plurals)
  • Adjective inflection: 'prachtig' → 'prachtige' before a noun
  • 'altijd' after the verb follows standard Dutch adverb placement

'Kunnen niet' = can't. 'Kiezen tussen' = to choose between. The adjectives 'spannende' and 'grappige' take -e endings before their nouns.

Let's try that new series that everyone recommends

'Laten we + infinitive' = Let's... 'Die iedereen aanbeveelt' is a relative clause. The separable verb 'aanbevelen' has its prefix 'aan' at the very end.
