01

Buongiorno, vorrei noleggiare un'auto per cinque giorni.

Good morning, I would like to rent a car for five days.

Literal Good morning, I would like to rent a car for five days.

A polite opening using 'vorrei' — the conditional of 'volere' — to state your rental need without sounding demanding.

  • 'Vorrei' is the conditional of 'volere'; more courteous than 'voglio' (I want)
  • 'Per cinque giorni' uses 'per' to express duration
02

Preferirei un'auto con il cambio automatico, se possibile.

I would prefer a car with automatic transmission, if possible.

Literal I would prefer a car with the automatic gear change, if possible.

'Preferirei' is the conditional of 'preferire', used to express preference politely without issuing a demand.

  • 'Preferirei' = conditional of 'preferire' (to prefer)
  • 'Se possibile' softens the request further — very common in service interactions
03

Qual è la tariffa giornaliera per una berlina di media grandezza?

What is the daily rate for a mid-size sedan?

Literal What is the daily tariff for a sedan of medium size?

Asking about pricing with 'qual è' (what is) followed by 'tariffa giornaliera' — a key phrase for any rental conversation.

  • 'Qual è' is used before vowels instead of 'quale è'
  • 'Giornaliera' is a feminine adjective agreeing with 'tariffa'
04

L'assicurazione è inclusa nel prezzo, o devo pagarla a parte?

Is insurance included in the price, or do I need to pay for it separately?

Literal The insurance is included in the price, or must I pay it separately?

A two-part question using 'o' (or) to clarify whether insurance is bundled or extra. 'A parte' means separately.

  • 'È inclusa' — feminine agreement: 'assicurazione' is feminine, so 'inclusa' not 'incluso'
  • 'A parte' = separately; a common adverbial phrase
05

Ci sono limiti di chilometraggio, oppure il chilometraggio è illimitato?

Are there mileage limits, or is the mileage unlimited?

Literal There are limits of mileage, or rather the mileage is unlimited?

Using 'ci sono' (there are) to ask about restrictions; 'oppure' introduces the alternative option politely.

  • 'Ci sono' = there are (existential construction)
  • 'Illimitato' = unlimited — note the double 'l' in Italian
06

Quali documenti devo presentare per completare il noleggio?

What documents do I need to present to complete the rental?

Literal Which documents must I present to complete the rental?

'Devo' (I must/need to) plus an infinitive is the standard structure for asking about requirements.

  • 'Devo' = first person singular of 'dovere' (must/to have to)
  • 'Presentare' = to present/show — regular -are infinitive
07

Posso restituire l'auto in un ufficio diverso da quello di ritiro?

Can I return the car at a different office from the pickup location?

Literal Can I return the car in a different office from that of pickup?

Using 'posso' (can I) to ask about drop-off flexibility; 'da quello di' means 'from the one of'.

  • 'Posso' = first person of 'potere' (to be able to/can)
  • 'Da quello di' = from the one of — a demonstrative pronoun construction
08

In caso di guasto, quale numero devo chiamare per l'assistenza stradale?

In case of a breakdown, what number should I call for roadside assistance?

Literal In case of breakdown, which number must I call for roadside assistance?

'In caso di' (in case of) + noun is a practical phrase for emergency situations at the rental desk.

  • 'In caso di' + noun = in case of + noun
  • 'Chiamare' is transitive and takes a direct object: 'chiamare un numero' needs no preposition before the object
  • 'Assistenza stradale' = roadside assistance (literally: road assistance)
09

La politica sul carburante è pieno contro pieno, vero?

The fuel policy is full-to-full, right?

Literal The policy on the fuel is full against full, right?

Confirming the standard full-to-full fuel arrangement; 'vero?' functions like a tag question meaning 'right?' or 'isn't it?'

  • 'Vero?' as a tag question = right? / isn't it? — works across all persons
  • 'Sul' = 'su' + 'il' — preposition contracted with the masculine article
10

Potrebbe mandarmi la conferma del noleggio via email, per favore?

Could you send me the rental confirmation by email, please?

Literal Could you send me the confirmation of the rental via email, please?

'Potrebbe' is the formal conditional of 'potere' — the most polite way to make a request of someone in a service role.

  • 'Potrebbe' = Lei-form conditional of 'potere' (could you — formal)
  • 'Mandarmi' = 'mandare' + 'mi' — object pronoun attached to the infinitive

Short reading

A tiny story stitched from today's words. Translation is hidden, tap to peek.

Sentence by sentence

arriva al banco del noleggio

arrives at the rental desk

'Al banco' = at the counter; 'del noleggio' = of the rental — a genitive construction identifying the type of desk

Vorrei noleggiare una berlina compatta

I would like to rent a compact sedan

'Vorrei' (conditional of 'volere') signals a polite register; 'berlina compatta' specifies the vehicle class

dice educatamente

he says politely

'Educatamente' is an adverb formed from 'educato' (polite/well-mannered); it follows the verb in Italian

le tariffe giornaliere e i pacchetti assicurativi

the daily rates and insurance packages

Both noun phrases are plural; 'assicurativi' is masculine plural to agree with 'pacchetti'

se il chilometraggio è illimitato

whether the mileage is unlimited

'Se' introduces an indirect question (whether); 'illimitato' agrees in gender and number with 'chilometraggio'

dopo aver esaminato il contratto con attenzione

after examining the contract carefully

'Dopo aver + past participle' = after having done something — a very common Italian compound structure

Section 4

Pattern of the day

One grammar move, explained once, that unlocks dozens of sentences.

Polite Requests with the Conditional: vorrei, preferirei, potrebbe

In Italian, switching from the present tense to the conditional transforms a direct statement into a courteous request. 'Voglio' (I want) can sound blunt in a service context; 'vorrei' (I would like) is warm and socially expected. The same shift applies to other verbs: 'preferisco' → 'preferirei', 'posso' → 'potrei', and for formal requests to staff, 'può' → 'potrebbe' (could you). Mastering these forms is the single fastest way to sound naturally polite in Italian.

volere → vorrei | preferire → preferirei | potere (I) → potrei | potere (you, formal) → potrebbe

Vorrei noleggiare un SUV per tre giorni.

I would like to rent an SUV for three days.

Preferirei un'auto più piccola, se possibile.

I would prefer a smaller car, if possible.

Potrei vedere le diverse opzioni disponibili?

Could I see the different available options?

Potrebbe spiegarmi le condizioni del contratto?

Could you explain the contract terms to me?

Hint Use 'vorrei' — the conditional of 'volere' — for a polite request.

Q2Fill in the blank

Complete the sentence: '_____ è inclusa nel prezzo, o devo pagarla a parte?' (Ask whether a type of coverage is included.)

Hint This word starts with 'l'a...' and protects you financially on the road.

Q3Choose the best

You want to know the daily rate for a mid-size sedan. Which sentence is most appropriate?

Q4Translate to native

Translate to English: 'Ci sono limiti di chilometraggio, oppure il chilometraggio è illimitato?'
