Use 我可以 (wǒ kěyǐ) + verb phrase + 吗 (ma)？to politely ask for permission to do something. This is one of the most common request forms in casual Mandarin. 能...吗？(néng...ma?) is a near-identical pattern emphasizing ability rather than permission, and the two are often interchangeable in conversation.
